Love Your Hearing: Ruthy’s Real Story of Overcoming the Stigma

When you think of hearing loss, you might picture it happening suddenly, or only to those far older than yourself. But hearing problems can develop at any age, and for many the signs are easy to miss until they quietly change your everyday interactions.

Ruthy’s journey began with something so simple, she hardly noticed it at first.

“It began with my fixation on people’s mouth movements. I noticed my eyes would move from watching their eyes to watching their lips,” she recalls.

This quiet shift in focus is something you might not recognize in yourself, but it’s a common first sign.

The Realization That Changed Everything

Hearing loss was the last thing on Ruthy’s mind. Like many, she had no idea that something so subtle could point to a bigger issue.

“I didn’t even realize it was a hearing loss until I had my ears checked,” she admits. “That’s when I realized I had a hearing loss.”

Do you catch yourself watching people’s lips more than their eyes? This is a small sign that shouldn’t be ignored. When you start to rely more on visual cues, like lip reading, it’s often your brain compensating for sounds you aren’t fully catching.

If you’ve ever found yourself straining to hear in noisy environments, or frequently asking others to repeat themselves, it might be time to consider your hearing health.

Routine hearing checkups are just as important as eye exams or dental visits. By catching changes early, you give yourself the best chance at maintaining an active, confident lifestyle.

Overcoming the Stigma and Fear

After her diagnosis, Ruthy faced fears and doubts that many experience: “My initial thought was fear of losing my hearing completely. I felt disabled and began wondering if anyone else could tell that I was struggling to hear. I felt alone and ashamed.”

For Ruthy, the weight of social stigma was real, especially the outdated idea that hearing loss is something only older adults experience. She questioned whether she’d be treated differently, or if her career might suffer.

You may worry about what friends or coworkers will think, or how your professional life could be affected. But there’s power in challenging these old narratives.

As Ruthy points out, “People wear glasses to help them see and they are accepted. People wear hearing aids to hear, how is that different?”

When you reframe hearing care as simply another aspect of taking care of your health, it becomes clear that there’s nothing to hide or be ashamed of. Prioritizing your hearing is just as normal, and just as empowering, as taking care of your vision.

Finding Compassionate Care at Highline Hearing

Taking the first step can be the hardest part. Ruthy remembers, “From the first phone call (which took me weeks to make) to being fitted for my ‘ears,’ the staff was courteous, compassionate, professional, and caring.”

If you feel nervous about reaching out, you can rest assured that your concerns will be met with empathy and understanding at Highline Hearing.

What stands out most in Ruthy’s story is the transformation from feeling isolated to feeling empowered.

“I was never made to feel like I had a disability; instead, the team helped me feel empowered because I could now actually hear!” she enthuses.

That’s the experience you deserve: one where you’re not defined by a diagnosis, but uplifted by care that reconnects you to the world

Life-Changing Results: Hearing in the Modern World

Your hearing health can have a profound impact on every part of your life, including your career.

“I firmly believe that my new hearing aids were key to my landing my dream job because I could hear well,” Ruthy shares. “I understood the questions being asked of me, and that gave me the confidence I needed to show my future employer why they should bring me onto their team.”

When you hear clearly, you gain the confidence to seize new opportunities and fully participate in the moments that matter most, both in and out of the office.

High-Tech and Convenient Features

Ruthy also says she loves sharing how modern and high tech her “ears” are.

With the latest hearing technology, you benefit from devices that seamlessly fit into your life, offering features like Bluetooth streaming, phone integration, and more, making hearing aids a smart, discreet accessory for any lifestyle.

“Being in the cyber security world, I emphasize how modern and high tech my ‘ears’ are now,” Ruthy says. “I tell [friends] they are rechargeable and I can listen to Spotify through them, take calls through them, and work out with them in place.”

Today’s hearing aids are nothing like those of the past. Quite often, modern designs are so subtle that people won’t even know you’re wearing them!

Prioritize Your Hearing Health This May

If you’ve been putting off a hearing check, Ruthy’s story is your reminder that you are not alone. Her advice? “Show yourself some love and get your hearing checked and if needed, wear those new ‘ears’… it will change your life.”

Prioritizing your hearing health is an act of self-care, and sharing your journey can help break down the stigma for others. Rest assured that compassionate, expert support is available when you’re ready to take the first step.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is hearing loss only a concern for older adults?

A: No. Hearing loss can affect anyone, regardless of age; as Ruthy’s story illustrates, people in their 30s and 40s can also experience hearing changes. Early detection and care help you maintain your lifestyle and confidence, no matter your age.

Q: Will people treat me differently if I wear hearing aids?

A: Stigma around hearing aids is outdated and fading. Today’s devices are small, discreet, and packed with technology, and they often go unnoticed by people who don’t know you’re wearing them. Most importantly, prioritizing your hearing empowers you to engage fully with others, whether at work or in social settings.

Q: What can I expect at my first appointment with Highline Hearing?

A: You can expect a warm, professional environment where your concerns are heard and respected. From your first phone call to your personalized care plan, you benefit from a team focused on empowerment and support, helping you feel comfortable and confident every step of the way.
