What Happens During a Tinnitus Test?
If you are seeking help for your tinnitus, you couldn’t have come to a better place because Highline Audiology and Hearing Aids has a tinnitus specialist.
Despite having been told that there is nothing that can be done to treat your tinnitus, there’s always hope and always something new we can try.
We’ve heard far too many stories of doctors, and even audiologists, telling patients that there’s nothing they can do to treat tinnitus.
Those who do not specialize in tinnitus do not usually stay current on the latest advances in tinnitus care and management.
Highline is the opposite.
Who Is Qualified to Diagnose Tinnitus?
A doctor of audiology with the right equipment can diagnose your tinnitus properly. An audiologist or ENT doctor can only test it to a certain level, and you might be misdiagnosed.
What Happens at a Tinnitus Hearing Test?
First, we’ll ask about your hearing history. That includes family history, hearing history, and health history. Some questions can relate to injuries to your eardrum, noise exposure, and tinnitus in your family.
We want to get an idea of what you have been through, what you’re experiencing, and how well you are hearing. We will also ask how much the tinnitus is affecting your day-to-day life.
Then we’ll do a physical exam of your ear with otoscopy. Some people get tinnitus just because their ear is plugged with wax, which is easy to remove and can sometimes result in the tinnitus going away.
Testing Your Tinnitus Sound
Next is the test in our sound booth.
Testing sound – We have specific equipment for high-frequency testing. Most hearing care professionals will test through to 8000 Hz, but sometimes tinnitus lives outside that frequency – it’s in the higher frequencies that don't have anything to do with speech, and not many places have the equipment to test it that high.
We also do speech testing to see how your brain is able to process speech.
And we do bone testing. We send beeping noises through the skull to see how your cochlea responds to sounds. That helps us see where the problem is.
Tinnitus Treatment
Once the testing portion is over, we go over the results with you and discuss the next steps. Any number of things can show up in the results, which leads us to what we’ll recommend.
We form a treatment plan for your tinnitus. We've got every manufacturer's hearing aids available to us at this office, so we can see what technology will work best for you specifically – what your brain is going to respond to best.
We will monitor your hearing and symptoms for changes over a specific amount of time.
