Why Buying a Hearing Aid Online Isn’t The Same as Hearing Care
Imagine browsing the internet one evening and coming across an enticing ad: affordable hearing aids delivered right to your doorstep. It seems convenient, promising a quick and effortless solution to your hearing difficulties.
But is it really that simple?
This scenario, although tempting, misses out on the crucial aspect of quality hearing care, which is not just about the product, but the journey and support that comes with it.
The Rise of Online Hearing Aid Sales
With the growth of direct-to-consumer (DTC) hearing devices, the appeal of convenience and low cost has captured the interest of many. These devices offer a seemingly easy solution at a lower price point. However, what’s often missing from this DIY model is the professional expertise that is crucial in achieving the best hearing experience.
The Power of Personalized Hearing Care
Regular exposure to loud noises can gradually damage one’s hearing over time. After working in a noisy environment for many years, this is exactly what happened to Ken.
He explains, “I first realized I had a hearing problem in my 40s. I worked in a high noise environment. Although I used earplugs while in these areas, I noticed I wasn’t hearing people talk in normal conversations during breaks.
“We had a hearing specialist on site and my hearing regressed every year. I started losing the ability to hear high pitch noise people around me could pick up. I didn’t let it bother me at first, but as time moved on, I knew I had to do a better job in protecting the hearing I still had.”
Recognizing the importance of continual hearing care, Ken needed a new audiologist after moving to the area. Highline Hearing was highly recommended by his audiologist in Bellingham.
Ken says, “Since I have filed a claim with Labor and Industries, I am able to receive hearing aids and batteries without having to pay for them. However, I need to go to an audiologist to check my fit, repair or replace aids damaged or lost, and have check-ups on my current hearing ability. I’m sure it’s going to be good!”
Referring to life with hearing aids, he comments, “Hearing aids don’t replace the hearing you lost. They do help in picking up sounds I would have missed without them.
“You notice little things while wearing them. Like the turn signal in your car or birds in the air around you. My wife likes that I don’t have the volume up so loud on the TV. Being able to hear our granddaughter at the dinner table or on the baby monitor is worth wearing them.”
To those who are currently struggling with their hearing, Ken says, “Go in and get your hearing checked. If you need them, then get them! You would be surprised what you’re missing without even knowing it.
“Let the professionals help you choose aids that can be unnoticeable if you feel you need to hide them. There are so many choices these days!”
What You Miss When You Skip Professional Hearing Care
A. No Comprehensive Hearing Evaluation
Hearing loss is not one-size-fits-all; a thorough hearing evaluation by a professional can identify specific needs, revealing underlying medical issues such as earwax build-up or infections, which an online purchase cannot diagnose.
Comprehensive hearing tests can also test for tinnitus and can find issues with earwax impaction affecting hearing, which could be missed by jumping straight to hearing aids.
B. No Personalized Fitting or Real-Ear Measurements
Off-the-shelf settings from online hearing aids do not reflect your unique hearing profile. This can lead to poor fit and unsatisfactory results.
Professional hearing aids and fittings ensure that your hearing aids are fine-tuned to your personal hearing needs, no matter what your ears need to succeed.
C. No Follow-Up Support
When buying a hearing aid online, you lack crucial follow-up support; regular adjustments and maintenance are essential as your hearing needs evolve.
A team of professional hearing health experts can assist with troubleshooting issues like feedback or discomfort, ensuring optimal performance.
D. No Accountability or Long-Term Care
When challenges arise, who will you turn to for help with an online purchase? The absence of accountability can lead to wasted money and frustration if the device fails to meet your expectations. In contrast, professional hearing care provides peace of mind with long-term support.
Hearing Care Is a Partnership, Not a Product
Building a relationship with a hearing professional is invaluable. Continuous support through cleanings, repairs, reprogramming, and counseling ensures your hearing aids adapt to your lifestyle changes. As your needs change, so does your care strategy, ensuring your hearing is always at its best.
Professional hearing care goes beyond just improving sound; it enhances your quality of life.
A holistic approach supports mental health, social connections, and cognitive well-being. Professional care guides you through the emotional and lifestyle adjustments associated with hearing loss, helping you thrive in your everyday life.
Not Just Hearing Better, But Living Better
While online hearing aids might appear to be an easy fix, they lack the comprehensive and personalized care required for successful outcomes. Real relationships with hearing professionals bring real results, providing assurance and a community of support.
Discover the difference that professional hearing care can make, invest in a quality hearing evaluation today and experience auditory health that improves life, not just sound.
